OVERVIEW
Kerry’s Coastline, Properly Explored
Kerry has some of the most dramatic coastline in Europe — sea cliffs, hidden beaches, Atlantic headlands and views that stop you in your tracks. The Coastal Walking Escape is built around three days of walking that coastline at a proper pace, with a guide who knows where the best views are, where the hidden coves are and what the landscape around you means.
Based in Sneem, you’ll reach different sections of Kerry’s southwest coast each day, from the sheltered shores of Kenmare Bay to the raw, fully exposed Wild Atlantic headlands facing out towards the Skellig Islands. Each route is chosen for that day’s conditions and each one is different.
This is for walkers who feel most at home with the sea in front of them.
All meals are included throughout — breakfast at the Lodge each morning, packed lunch on the trail and an evening meal after every walking day. Luxury B&B accommodation at Álaind Lodge. Expert guiding. No hidden extras.

ITINERARY
Your 4-Night Coastal Experience
Arrive at Álaind Lodge in Sneem and settle in. Evening welcome briefing with Fergal — an introduction to the coastline you’ll be walking, what to expect and anything you need to prepare. Free evening to relax or visit Sneem village.
Your first full day starts on the Kerry Way on the outskirts of Sneem toward Staigue Fort. If time allows, a short detour brings you to one of Ireland’s best-preserved stone ring forts, believed to be over 1,500 years old and sitting quietly in the hills above the coast.
Continuing on, you’ll pass through Coad, home to the old Coad Church and graveyard and take a moment at Saint Crohan’s holy well.
Next, the trail introduces the Planetary Walk, a creative, scaled model of our solar system that lets you journey past the planets as you walk.
A day that adds archaeology and ancient history to three days of wild Atlantic walking.
| Route type: | Distance: | Ascent: | Max height: | Time: |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kerry Way / coastal | Approx 12km | 315m ascent | 200m | 4–4.5 hours |
Day three takes you to Derrynane — Kerry’s Blue Flag beach, set in a landscape of mature woodland, sweeping dunes and the seashore nature trail that follows the coastline around this famous bay. The day is a full loop: woodland, beach, dunes, shoreline and back — 12km of walking with the Atlantic always close. On clear days, the Skellig Islands are visible from the high points; at the beach end, there’s sometimes a chance to swim.
| Route type: | Distance: | Ascent: | Max height: | Time: |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal loop / beach / woodland | Approx 12km | 300m ascent | 130m | 4 hours |
The Bolus Head Loop begins with a steady climb toward an old Napoleonic-era signal tower, standing like a sentinel high above the Atlantic. Reaching the top rewards you with breathtaking, 360-degree panoramic views. On a clear day, you’ll be treated to an unmatched, front-row look at the jagged peaks of the Skellig Islands rising dramatically from the sea.
From this spectacular vantage point, the trail begins its descent, skirting the edge of wild, sheer cliffs. The roar of crashing waves below accompanies you as you wind your way down toward the rugged shoreline, making for a truly wild and dramatic finish to this unforgettable loop.
| Route type: | Distance: | Ascent: | Max height: | Time: |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kerry Way / Dark Skies trail | Approx 10km | 300m ascent | 2850m | 4 hours |
Breakfast at Álaind Lodge, then departure. Fergal can suggest a short village walk or a final stop in Sneem if your travel allows.

WHO THIS SUITS
Is the Coastal Walking Escape Right For You?
Difficulty — Moderate
Coastal terrain in Kerry involves a mix of cliff paths, grassy headlands, rocky shoreline and some uneven ground. Walking days are typically 4–6 hours. There’s less significant ascent than our mountain holidays, but coastal paths can be more exposed — particularly on windy days and the ground underfoot is often uneven. A reasonable level of fitness and confidence on irregular ground is needed.
Perfect For:
- Anyone who feels most at home near the sea
- Those who want to experience Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way properly — on foot
- Solo travellers, couples and small groups
- Walkers who prefer coast over mountain terrain
- People with a moderate fitness level who want a genuinely rewarding walking holiday

FAQs
Coastal Walking Escape — FAQs
-
Yes. The Coastal Walking Escape is designed around coastal terrain — headlands, cliff paths, shoreline and bay walking. There is minimal significant ascent. It’s an ideal guided walking holiday for those who prefer coastal to mountain scenery.
-
Kerry’s coast is exposed and wind is part of the experience. Fergal will always walk unless conditions are genuinely unsafe. On very windy days, he’ll choose more sheltered coastal routes or lower-level alternatives. Waterproof and windproof gear is essential regardless of forecast.
-
On clear days, the Skellig Islands are clearly visible from several points on Kerry’s southwestern coast. Fergal will take you to vantage points that offer the best views. Weather and visibility on any given day will determine how clear the view is.
-
Skellig Michael boat trips run from Derrynane, Portmagee and other harbours during the summer season. Fergal can recommend local operators. A boat trip would be done on your own time — typically on your departure day and is not included in the walking holiday.
-
The Sneem Signature Walking Holiday combines three different terrain types — mountain, coast and lake/valley. The Coastal Walking Escape focuses exclusively on Kerry’s coastline across all three walking days. If the sea is your priority, this is the one.
