Kerry Hidden Peaks Escape

Six nights. Five days in Kerry’s most remote mountain terrain. The routes that don’t appear on signposted trails, led by someone who knows exactly where to find them.

OVERVIEW

Kerry’s Hidden Mountains — Five Days Off the Beaten Path

Kerry’s well-known mountains are spectacular. Its lesser-known ones are something else entirely.

The Kerry Hidden Peaks Escape is our most ambitious guided walking holiday — six nights, five full days and some of the most remote, demanding and rarely walked mountain terrain in Ireland. These are the peaks, ridges and high-altitude landscapes that Fergal has spent years exploring and guiding: routes that take real mountain experience to navigate safely and that reward you with the kind of solitude and scenery that the well-trodden paths simply cannot offer.

This is not a holiday for walkers new to mountain terrain. It’s a holiday for those who have been in the hills before, who want to go further and who want someone with them who knows the way.

All meals included throughout — a hearty breakfast before each mountain day, packed lunch on the trail and an evening meal every night. Luxury B&B accommodation at Álaind Lodge. No hidden extras.

ITINERARY

Your 6-Night Hidden Peaks Experience

Day 1 — Arrival & Mountain Briefing

Arrive at Álaind Lodge in Sneem. Full expedition briefing with Fergal — a detailed introduction to the week’s mountain terrain, kit requirements, safety protocols and daily routine. This is a more involved briefing than our other holidays; the terrain demands it.

Day 2 — Staigue Mountain Ridge

Your first full day takes you onto the Staigue Mountain Ridge — the high ground above one of Ireland’s most remarkable Iron Age monuments. Away from any marked trail, you’re immediately into the kind of terrain that defines this holiday: remote, quiet, with views across the Iveragh Peninsula and out to the Atlantic. This is a serious mountain day from the first step.

Day 3 — Ireland’s Top 100: The Peak Day

Today targets one of Ireland’s Top 100 highest peaks — the serious mountain ground that the Hidden Peaks holiday is built for. Precipitous mountain walls, glaciated valleys, coom lakes and cascading waterfalls are all around you on the approach and descent. Whichever summit Fergal takes you to, this is the day you’ll talk about when you get home.

Day 4 — Glaciated Valleys, Coom Lakes & Waterfalls

A different character today — the glaciated landscapes that make the Dunkerron Mountains a geological wonderland. Coom lakes sitting in ancient hollows, cascading waterfalls, hidden valleys and the deep quiet of terrain that almost no one visits. A physically demanding day with a different kind of drama from the exposed ridgelines.

Day 5 — Slievenashashka Loop

The Slievenashashka Loop — one of Fergal’s favourite days in the Dunkerrons. A full mountain circuit over terrain that most Kerry visitors never discover: wild, remote and rewarding in a way that guidebook peaks rarely are. A long, satisfying loop with solitude from start to finish.

Day 6 — The White Sand Finale

After five days in Kerry’s mountains, the final day ends on a white sand beach — a contrast so complete it earns its place as a finale. The route works its way down from the high ground to the Kerry coast, finishing at one of the peninsula’s hidden beaches. Five days of solitude, summits and glaciated valleys; one last evening with the Atlantic in front of you.

Day 7 — Departure

Breakfast and departure. Five days of serious mountain walking deserves a proper last breakfast.

FAQs

Kerry Hidden Peaks Escape — FAQs

  • How remote is ‘remote’?

On several days during this holiday you will be walking on open mountain terrain with no waymarked paths, no other walkers and no nearby facilities. Fergal navigates using his detailed knowledge of the terrain and professional Mountain Leader skills. This is one of the things that makes the experience exceptional and it’s why the experience level requirement is taken seriously.

  • Will we walk routes that don’t appear in guidebooks?

Yes. That’s the point. Fergal has spent years exploring Kerry’s mountain landscape and has walked routes that are not documented in any guidebook or trail guide. The Hidden Peaks Escape gives you access to that knowledge.

  • What’s the difference between this and the Mountain Peaks holiday?

The Kerry Mountain Peaks Holiday is four nights / three mountain days — a concentrated, challenging introduction to Kerry’s mountain terrain, including well-known peaks and routes. The Hidden Peaks Escape is six nights / five days, with more remote terrain, more off-trail days and a more expedition-like character. It goes deeper into Kerry’s mountain landscape.

  • Do I need to book a pre-holiday call with Fergal?

Yes. For this holiday, Fergal will want to speak with you — by phone or WhatsApp — before confirming your booking. This is to understand your experience level and make sure the week is exactly right for you.

  • Is this suitable for a group with mixed experience levels?

It can be, depending on what ‘mixed’ means. Fergal can accommodate groups where all members have solid mountain experience but at slightly different levels. He cannot safely take groups where some members have no prior mountain experience — that would not be fair to them or to the group. Contact Fergal to discuss your group’s experience before booking.
