Walking Lightly — Our Sustainability Commitment
Álaind Walking operates in one of Ireland’s most ecologically important and visually stunning landscapes. Keeping it that way — for the walkers who
come after us and for the communities and wildlife that live in it — is part of the job.
We describe what we do as ‘Slow Tourism’ — low-carbon, low-impact, deeply local. We keep our walks close to Sneem, our guests stay at Álaind Lodge
or with neighbours in the village, and we eat and socialise in Sneem throughout the holiday. That keeps the economic benefit of walking tourism in
the community where it belongs. It’s our way of life as a family-run business at the heart of Sneem, not a policy we adopted.
Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace
Every Álaind Walking guided walk follows Leave No Trace Ireland’s seven principles. These aren’t optional — they’re how Fergal operates in the field and guests are briefed on them before every walk. In practice this means: staying on designated paths where they exist and choosing routes that minimise erosion where they don’t; carrying out all waste; respecting wildlife, livestock and other walkers; and leaving every landscape exactly as we found it.
Fergal is a Leave No Trace member and incorporates the principles into every walk as a matter of course — not as a bolt-on policy. Leave No Trace is also a formal part of the Mountain Skills Training curriculum, ensuring guests who develop their skills through Álaind carry good practice with them wherever they walk. As Fergal puts it: respecting the land and the landowners who welcome us is the most important aspect of our walking.
SMALL GROUPS
Small Groups, Lower Impact
Álaind Walking keeps group sizes small — typically a maximum of 8 guests on guided holidays. This is partly about the quality of the experience (eight people on a mountain is still a walk; fifteen is an expedition). But it’s also about impact: smaller groups have a significantly lower effect on trail surfaces, wildlife and the broader landscape than large commercial operations.
MINIMISE TRANSPORT
Low-Carbon Walking — Minimising Daily Transport
By keeping our guided walks local to Sneem and the immediate Iveragh Peninsula, we minimise the daily transport required during your holiday. Most walks begin with a short drive — or in some cases directly from the Lodge door. Guests who travel to Kerry by train (Killarney is on the Dublin–Cork rail line) can be collected by Fergal and complete their entire holiday car-free. For guests who arrive by car, the car can stay parked at the Lodge for the holiday.
CIRCULAR LIVING
Circular Living at Álaind Lodge
Sustainability at Álaind isn’t just about what happens on the trail — it starts at the Lodge.
LOCAL ECONOMY
Supporting the Local Economy
Sneem is a small community. Álaind Walking is a Sneem business and it aims to keep the economic benefit of walking tourism in the local economy where possible.
- Álaind Lodge is a locally owned and operated B&B — your accommodation spend stays in Sneem.
- Brown bread baked fresh by the Sacre Coeur Restaurant. Sneem Black Pudding from Burns and Peter O’Sullivan Butchers, both on North Square.
- Packed lunches prepared fresh each morning using the two delis in Sneem.
- Castlecove Honey — locally produced and available to guests to savour or purchase at the Lodge.
- Fresh salad garnishes grown in our own vegetable plots at Álaind Lodge.
- Fergal recommends local restaurants, pubs and shops and supports local retailers wherever possible.
- Where possible, activities and add-ons recommended to guests are sourced from local Kerry operators.
LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION
Landscape & Conservation
Fergal is a member of the Kerry Way Walking Trail Committee and Walk Leader and Safety & Training Officer with Sneem Walking Club — active roles that contribute directly to the maintenance and safety of the trails Álaind guests walk.
At Álaind Lodge, the gardens are managed for biodiversity. Guests who join us for breakfast are often treated to the sight of the Lodge’s healthy population of wild birds. Local seaweed is used as garden compost, rainwater is harvested for garden use and all waste is segregated, recycled and composted.
TRAVEL
Getting Here Without a Car
Kerry is challenging to reach without a car and Álaind Walking doesn’t pretend otherwise. But for guests who want to reduce their travel footprint, Killarney is accessible by rail from Dublin and Cork and Fergal offers transfers from Killarney station and airport to Sneem. Guests who arrive by public transport can do so and the holiday itself can be entirely car-free once you’re at the Lodge.
