THE STORY
How Álaind Walking Came to Be
Álaind — pronounced ‘All-ind’ — is an old Irish word meaning beautiful place. It’s a name that fits Sneem, fits the Iveragh Peninsula and fits the philosophy behind everything Álaind Walking does: find the most beautiful places in Kerry, walk to them and give guests the time and the guidance to actually take them in.
Fergal Harrington has been walking these hills and coastlines for most of his life — his connection to this landscape began during childhood summer holidays in Sneem, long before he became a professional guide. He knows the Iveragh Peninsula in the way you only know a place when you’ve walked it in every season, in every kind of weather and with every kind of walker, from complete beginners to experienced mountaineers ticking off Carrauntoohil as part of a longer journey through Ireland’s mountains.
The walking holiday business grew from that knowledge and from a simple observation: most people who come to Kerry for walking don’t get nearly as much out of it as they could. They follow the obvious routes, they don’t know the hidden ones, they don’t know when the weather window on the ridge will hold or when to turn back and they often don’t have anyone with them who can explain what they’re looking at — the geology, the history, the ecology of a landscape that’s been shaped over millions of years and occupied by people for thousands.
Álaind Walking exists to change that. One base. Qualified Leadership. Small groups. Routes chosen for what they deliver, not what’s on the tourist trail. Walking that leaves guests knowing Kerry better than they did before and almost always wanting to come back.

Fergal is a qualified Mountain Leader registered with Mountaineering Ireland — Ireland’s national body for hillwalking and mountaineering. That’s not just a credential. It means structured training in mountain navigation, group management, emergency response and route planning in variable conditions. Every guided walk you do with Álaind Walking is led by someone who has trained specifically for exactly this.

Small groups
Álaind Walking keeps groups small — typically a maximum of 8 guests on open guided holidays. That’s the number at which a walk still feels like a walk, not an expedition. It means Fergal can adapt the route on the day, read the group and make sure everyone gets what they came for. The Iveragh Peninsula has thousands of kilometres of walking country. Most guided operations take people up the same half-dozen routes. Fergal’s itineraries go deeper — into coastal terrain, remote valleys and ridge lines that most visitors never find. The routes are chosen for their quality, not their familiarity.

THE LODGE
Álaind Lodge — The Base
Álaind Lodge is a luxury B&B on the quiet edge of Sneem village, run by Fergal, Trish and Chris. Ensuite rooms, a hearty breakfast every morning, outdoor seating, a drying room for wet gear and a guest lounge with a fire stove for the evenings when Kerry weather does what Kerry weather does.
The Lodge is the beginning and end of every guided holiday day. Guests come back to the same place each evening — to dry their gear, compare notes over dinner in the village and wake up ready to do it again. It’s a simple formula and it works.
