Kerry Mountain Peaks Walking Holiday

Four nights and three days in Kerry’s mountains. Serious ascent, ridge walking and some of Ireland’s finest views, all led safely by a qualified Mountain Leader.

OVERVIEW

Kerry’s Mountains — Properly, With Someone Who Knows Them

Kerry is home to some of the most dramatic mountain terrain in Ireland — the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, the Dunkerron range, Mullaghanattin and a collection of peaks and ridges that reward those willing to work for the view. The Kerry Mountain Peaks Walking Holiday is built for walkers who want exactly that: proper mountain days, meaningful ascent and the kind of experience you don’t get from a waymarked loop trail.

Led by qualified Mountain Leader Fergal Harrington, the holiday covers three full mountain days based from Álaind Lodge in Sneem. Routes are selected each morning based on weather and conditions — including, where conditions allow, some of Kerry’s most celebrated and demanding terrain. You’ll be fully supported throughout, with professional guidance, safety cover and Fergal’s deep knowledge of these mountains.

This is a challenging holiday. It’s also an exceptional one.

All meals are included: a hearty breakfast before every mountain day, packed lunch on the trail and a proper evening meal when you return. Luxury B&B accommodation at Álaind Lodge throughout.

ITINERARY

Your 4-Night Mountain Experience

Day 1 — Arrival & Mountain Briefing

Arrive at Álaind Lodge. Welcome briefing with Fergal — a more detailed introduction for the mountain days ahead, including what to expect, safety protocols and kit check. This holiday requires proper preparation and Fergal takes the briefing seriously.

Day 2 — Into the Dunkerrons: The Warm-Up Day

Your first full day in the mountains takes you onto a lower Dunkerron ridge to get the legs working and the lungs open. The route follows a section of the Kerry Way — also an ancient pilgrimage trail — past holy wells before striking out onto the wide open ridge. Mountain views to one side, the coastline dropping away to the other. Demanding enough to feel real, attainable enough to set you up for what’s coming.

Day 3 — The Peak Day

The centrepiece of the holiday. Today targets the high Dunkerron peaks — routes may include Mullaghanattin (773m, known as Ireland’s Matterhorn for its dramatic profile), Beann (775m), Finneraragh (667m) or Knocknagantee (636m). Precipitous mountain walls, glacial lakes and waterfalls surround you throughout. Fergal confirms the exact route on the morning based on conditions and group ability — but this is a serious mountain day whichever peak is chosen.

Day 4 — Third Mountain Day

A third day in the mountains, a different range and a different character entirely. Kerry’s mountain landscape is vast enough that three days here barely scratches the surface — each day reveals something new. Depending on conditions, this may include Carrauntoohil (Ireland’s highest mountain at 1,038m) or an alternative ridge in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. Fergal makes the call each morning.

Day 5 — Departure

Breakfast at Álaind Lodge and departure. After three hard days in Kerry’s mountains, a late breakfast is well earned.

FAQs

Kerry Mountain Peaks Holiday — FAQs

  • Will we climb Carrauntoohil?

Carrauntoohil — Ireland’s highest mountain at 1,038m — may be included on this holiday, depending on conditions and group ability. Fergal assesses mountain weather and trail conditions each morning and will only include Carrauntoohil when it’s genuinely safe to do so. It’s a serious mountain and safety always comes first. If conditions don’t allow it, an equally rewarding alternative will be chosen.

  • What mountain experience do I need?

Fergal assesses mountain weather and trail conditions each morning and will only include Carrauntoohil when it’s genuinely safe to do so. It’s a serious mountain and safety always comes first. • What kit is essential for this holiday?

Full mountain kit is essential: waterproof hiking boots with ankle support and good grip, waterproof jacket and over-trousers, layered warm clothing (no cotton), a day pack, at least 1.5 litres of water and packed lunch. Walking poles are strongly recommended. Fergal will confirm a full kit list on booking.

  • How does this differ from the Kerry Hidden Peaks Escape?

The Kerry Mountain Peaks Holiday is four nights / three mountain days at a Challenging grade — a concentrated, demanding mountain holiday. The Kerry Hidden Peaks Escape is six nights at the same grade, with five full mountain days covering more remote and lesser-known terrain. The Hidden Peaks holiday is longer, more remote and more expedition-like in character.

  • What happens if a peak is not safe to climb on the day?

Fergal checks mountain weather telemetry every morning. If conditions on the planned route are not safe — high winds, low visibility, icy ground — he will choose an alternative route that offers a similarly rewarding experience at a safer level. Safety is non-negotiable. In very exceptional circumstances, a full refund or reschedule may be offered.
